It would have been an ordinary flight for a passenger at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York until the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) flagged his checked bag with an Xbox gaming console. However, the additional security check led to the discovery of multiple fraudulent identification documents.

According to TSA, a supervisory officer in the checked baggage resolution area at LaGuardia conducted the inspection and found multiple fake IDs, which escalated the encounter.

TSA has been keen on items inside carry-ons and checked bags. Passengers must also follow rules on banned and allowed items. An Xbox gaming console is allowed in both checked and carry-on bags, but at LaGuardia, the console was in a checked bag.

However, because the Xbox triggered the alarm, TSA diverted it for an additional search, which led to the discovery of a plastic bag next to the console containing multiple fake IDs, each bearing different names and dates of birth and the same photograph.

“I noticed various driver’s licenses with different dates of birth and different class types, but all with the same photograph,” the TSA supervisory officer said. “I was focused on following our screening procedures and paying close attention to anything that appeared unusual. When I discovered the fraudulent IDs, I knew it was important to report the situation through the proper channels.”

The supervisory officer quickly notified the TSA manager, who agreed to report the incident. The officer reported it to the LGA TSA Coordination Center, the Port Authority Police Department, and the TSA Inspector, who conducted a brief investigation and found out the IDs were fraudulent.

Port Authority Police determined the IDs were fraudulent documents and immediately arrested the passenger before he could board the plane.

TSA asks passengers to carefully pack their Xbox gaming console and ensure all cords are wrapped.

“While you can pack expensive, fragile electronics items in checked or carry-on bags, we recommend packing them in your carry-on,” TSA said.

TSA also recommends checking with the airline if passengers want to put electronic devices in their carry-on to ensure the item will fit in the overhead bin or under the seat.

LaGuardia Airport Incident Highlights TSA Encounters With Fraudulent And Bizarre Items

The discovery of multiple fake IDs at LaGuardia was just one of the unusual and fraudulent items that TSA officers encountered during security screenings. TSA regularly checks all bags passing through the airport and subjects bags to additional screening when items violate security rules or may raise safety concerns for passengers and crew.

These heightened security measures are part of a broader transformation in U.S. aviation security following the 9/11 attacks, which changed how passengers and baggage are screened at airports across the country.

After 9/11, authorities introduced and strengthened airport security measures, giving TSA officers a critical role in identifying items that could pose a security risk or endanger the traveling public.

Over the years, TSA has reported numerous discoveries at airports across the U.S., ranging from suspected fraudulent documents to bizarre items hidden inside passengers’ luggage. Others would simply put some items in their carry-on to avoid checked baggage fees, including one passenger who recently taped a silver pocketknife to a metallic pole inside the bag.

Even with perfectly legal items in checked bags, TSA will sometimes confiscate them if they find they could trigger explosive alarms, such as the traveling couple’s Keurig coffeemaker.

Other security screenings, however, can uncover items that raise more serious concerns, especially when they involve suspected fraudulent documents. This was also the case with a passenger at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in August 2025 who had an “absurd” stash of fake passports hidden inside his carry-on bag.

When TSA’s routine security checks turn into immediate arrests, travelers should be more cautious and vigilant about what they can and cannot bring to the plane, as airport screenings are now intensified.

What TSA’s LaGuardia Airport Incident Means For Travelers

When TSA officers find something in travelers’ luggage that requires closer examination, passengers should expect additional inspections, and the LaGuardia Airport incident is an important reminder that heightened screenings are necessary.

Travelers must understand these security screenings and ensure their luggage adheres to TSA rules, whether it’s a checked or a carry-on bag, as inspections remain the same.

TSA has also listed all the acceptable identification at the checkpoint, advising travelers to check this list before traveling, so they do not arrive at the airport without acceptable ID, as the list is subject to change without notice.

Many secondary or additional screenings, however, were resolved without any further action, such as detentions or arrests, but it is still important for travelers to check with TSA when bringing items that may not go through security inspection.
