A recent passenger complaint has put one of American Airlines’ lesser-known clothing rules back into the spotlight, following a post on X that questioned the carrier about wearing footwear onboard.
American Airlines (AA) responded to the post and said that wearing shoes is encouraged, especially during takeoff and landing, for safety precautions. The complaint on X, however, also brought up attention to the clothing rule stated in AA’s Conditions of Carriage about dressing appropriately, explicitly mentioning that bare feet on board are not allowed.
American Airlines Passenger Complaints About Bare Feet Onboard
American Airlines’ official Conditions of Carriage already give passengers a clear expectation about appropriate attire when flying with the carrier, but many passengers are still clueless that the carrier has banned bare feet on board.
AA states that passengers must “dress appropriately” and that bare feet or offensive clothing aren’t allowed. The policy also says American may refuse to transport passengers who fail to comply with its rules or policies.
The photo posted on X showed bare feet, with the poster tagging American Airlines, saying, “Have you thought about requiring shoes on your flights?” AA’s response to the poster also mentioned sharing this concern with its in-flight team.
“We understand the concern. Shoes are encouraged onboard, particularly during takeoff, landing, walking around the cabin, and any unexpected situations. We appreciate you sharing your feedback. We’ll share this with our in-flight leadership team,” reads AA’s response to the post on X.
Interestingly, this rule highlights AA’s policy that passengers should dress appropriately and not travel barefoot, making the airline’s Conditions of Carriage clear that bare feet inside the aircraft fall outside its stated dress requirements.
AA’s response to the X user’s post, however, is notable, as the carrier’s Conditions of Carriage has already addressed the footwear issue under “Passenger Responsibility.”
American Airlines’ Conditions Of Carriage On Appropriate Clothing And Why It’s Important
Many passengers are used to airport baggage checks and boarding requirements, but are unaware of what contains the fine print that governs what they can or cannot wear onboard. However, American Airlines’ updated Conditions of Carriage give a specific set of expectations about their behavior or appearance, including dressing appropriately, such as wearing footwear.
It is also stated that passengers are expected to follow the airline rules and instructions, as part of their responsibility to help maintain hygiene and a safe environment at 30,000 feet.
American Airlines Conditions of Carriage Under Notable Passenger Responsibilities
The clothing rule isn’t just a suggestion, but a requirement, as governed by the carrier’s contract to comply with the law and government regulations. Some of the most notable, but often disregarded, rules include the following:
|
Dress appropriately; bare feet or offensive clothing aren’t allowed |
|
Be respectful that your odor isn’t offensive (unless it’s caused by a disability or illness) |
|
Understand and comply with all safety instructions |
|
Behave appropriately and respectfully with other passengers, crew, or any American Airlines team member |
|
Not to threaten the safety of the flight in any way |
These rules matter, as the carrier describes them as the contract between American Airlines and its passengers, meaning they agree to the set conditions as soon as they reserve their tickets.
AA has also explicitly stated that violating these rules can result in denied boarding, removal from the flight, or worse, legal matters.
“The safety and comfort of our customers and team members is our top priority. We will respond seriously to any language or behavior that threatens the well-being or functionality of our crew or any American Airlines team member. Violent or inappropriate actions may result in the denial of boarding, removal from the terminal or legal prosecution,” reads AA’s Conditions of Carriage.
For passengers, AA’s clothing rules may be lesser-known to many, but reading the fine print is crucial for safety and hygiene, as well as for airplane etiquette.
The little-known rule adds to AA’s headphones rule enforcement issue that recently occurred onboard, drawing the attention of some travelers to in-flight etiquette. However, unlike United Airlines, which enforces headphone use in-flight when listening to audio or watching videos, headphone bans are not stated in AA’s carriage regulations. Instead, AA considers it an unwritten cabin courtesy and general crew instruction.

Why Bare Feet On American Airlines Flights Pose Safety Risks
Going barefoot inside the aircraft, especially during long-haul flights, may seem comfortable, but aviation safety guidance gives travelers several reasons to keep their feet covered while the aircraft is moving.
During an emergency, having shoes on can effectively help passengers move quickly through a cabin filled with smoke, debris, or other hazards, making it easier to escape. Shoes that are enclosed or low-heeled, and even boots, are highly recommended, as they can be securely fastened.
For travelers, the safest approach is significantly simple: wear comfortable, secure shoes that can protect the feet, and they should keep them on during the flight unless crew instructions say otherwise. Following the cabin crew’s directions during unexpected situations is crucial to everyone’s safety on board.
Hygiene is another reason for not going barefoot onboard, not only on American Airlines, but on all carriers, as aircraft floors and the lavatory aren’t sterile, which can harbor germs, and bare feet have easier and more direct contact with these surfaces.
