United Airlines’ employees have been in the spotlight lately, mostly due to controversial customer disputes, from a flight attendant making an unusual request to a passenger watching a film on the plane to taking away a passenger’s carry-on. This also comes amid growing reports of “powertripping” U.S. airline workers, which has concerned travelers about their in-flight rights.
Such was the case in a recent incident involving a United flight attendant and a trash bag, which left an elderly passenger fearful for his return to the U.S. The story garnered mixed reactions among other travelers, especially as this is not the first time a United crew member faced complaints over similar conduct.
United Airlines Passenger Fears U.S. Return After Flight Attendant Misunderstanding
A 70-year-old United passenger is now worried about possible issues when returning to the U.S. after a flight attendant accused him of sexual assault during a flight to South Korea. One of the man’s children took to Reddit last week to share the story.
They maintained that it was just a misunderstanding that started with a trash bag. The post has since been deleted, but details of the dispute were preserved in a report by PYOK.

According to the family’s account, the situation unfolded during the crew member’s routine post-meal trash collection. After accidentally dropping a piece of garbage on the floor, the passenger bent down to pick it up and threw it into the trash bag right as the male flight attendant began walking forward.
The crew member then accused the man of sexual assault, claiming that his hand had made “contact” with him. Things escalated from there, with the United employee even taking the man’s passport along with his wife’s. A Korean-speaking flight attendant reportedly did not attempt to mediate either.
“My parents say the attendant became extremely angry and berated my father in front of other passengers. He later took both of their passports and held them for a considerable amount of time before returning them,” recalled the passenger’s kin. “There was a Korean-speaking flight attendant on board, but according to my parents, that person did not help them communicate or resolve the situation.”
Once the plane landed, passengers were instructed to remain seated as security officers boarded. The man and his wife were escorted off first and subsequently questioned near the gate. They were then told that the flight attendant could pursue legal action and that they should wait to see how things go.
However, the post says the family still doesn’t know whether a formal police complaint was filed. The Redditor then asked the United Airlines forum whether the fiasco could cause their father problems upon reentry into the U.S.
Mixed Reactions To United FA’s Allegations Against Elderly Passenger
Many travelers immediately sided with the man, agreeing that he was wrongfully accused of sexual assault by the United Airlines flight attendant. Some also note that this was evident in how the crew member refused to speak with airport authorities, as recounted in the Reddit post.
However, others also found it odd that this was published on social media in the first place, which likely caused its removal. Here are some of the most notable responses from the United community:
|
“If the flight attendant declined to speak with airport officials, as you say, I highly doubt that anything will come of this. While I can see how this would be upsetting for everyone involved, I also don’t see much upside in pursuing it on your end other than submitting a Customer Cares form through United if you want to report this flight attendant for what you believe were unjustified actions towards your parents.” |
|
“A FA has no authority to take a passport because it belongs to the Government. So, if that’s true, it needs to be reported to the US Embassy or Korean Government depending on which passport you are referring to.” |
|
“FA sounds like a total loser. If it were SA and he believed it was such, he would have spoken to the airport authorities. Instead, he refused to, because he either (a) sought to prey on your elderly father with malicious ulterior motives or (b) is absurdly sensitive and realized he over-blew a genuine accident (i.e. he shouldn’t be an FA).” |
|
“I’d delete this and lawyer up.” |
|
“I don’t know; if this happened to my dad I’d be pretty pissed. They yelled at him, took his passport, didn’t try to help translate, and had the police there. I’d try to escalate this with United. Anything less than a straight-up crotch grab could have been handled more discreetly and with more understanding.” |
|
“An apology on the spot might’ve made it go away, but once they got the police involved now you need to keep your mouth shut and lawyer up. Or at least be prepared to. I would consider flying home on a different carrier.” |
The Redditor also replied to some questions in the comment section, clarifying that their father was not denying any contact with the United worker. However, they are “100%” certain that their father “did not intend” to sexually assault the flight attendant by any means.
They added that his behavior was really confusing, particularly with the way he took the couple’s passports and later declined to speak to officials about the incident. TheTravel has reached out to United Airlines for comment on the incident.
The United Passenger Should Be Able To Return To The U.S.
As for anxieties over the man’s return to the U.S., one commenter was correct in saying that, as an American citizen, the man has the right to reenter the U.S. without any issues as long as he has a valid U.S. passport. He could even seek assistance from the U.S. Embassy while in South Korea to further clarify his options.
However, the man—as all U.S. citizens—should comply with U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) routine inspections, such as a baggage search or basic identity questions. While any traveler’s refusal to do so cannot be used as grounds for being denied entry, CBP does have the legal authority to detain them or seize their property until the mandatory examination is completed.
Not The First Inaccurate United Airlines FA Accusation Against Passenger
This is not the first time a United Airlines flight attendant drew flak for inaccurate accusations against a passenger. In July 2024, the carrier publicly apologized to two-time Super Bowl champion Terrell Davis after he was handcuffed and removed by the FBI from a United flight due to a simple misunderstanding.
At the time, Davis wrote in an official Instagram statement that he was only trying to get the attention of the crew member by lightly tapping his arm, as one of the former NFL player’s sons wanted a cup of ice. However, he was surprised when the employee responded, saying, “Don’t hit me.” It then resulted in a “violent assault” report.
“The flight attendant either didn’t hear or ignored his request and continued past our row,” Davis said of the incident. “I calmly reached behind me and lightly tapped his arm to get his attention to again ask for a cup of ice for my son. His response and the events that followed should stun all of us. I was confused, as were the passengers in front of me who witnessed the exchange. I thought nothing of it other than this particular employee was incredibly rude and blatantly wrong in his accusations of me hitting him.”
At the time, United said it was “clearly not the kind of travel experience we strive to provide.” An FBI spokesperson later confirmed that agents and law enforcement partners at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport responded to the reported situation, detained Davis, but then released him as he remained cooperative, and found the claim lacked merit. The male flight attendant was subsequently fired from his job.
What Passengers Should Do During Misunderstandings With Flight Attendants
The aforementioned situations highlight how an innocent interaction with a flight attendant can quickly get a passenger deemed “unruly” and have the police called on them. Unfortunately, despite travelers’ in-flight rights, immediately complying or trying to de-escalate any argument with a crew member is the best way to avoid any trouble. You may also approach a lead flight attendant or purser if they are not busy.
Experienced travelers highly suggest filing a complaint after landing and documenting the events discreetly. However, be cautious of filming, especially if the flight attendant does not give you consent. While the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does not explicitly ban general passenger videos, it enforces rules against careless or reckless operation and interfering with crew duties.
Additionally, while United CEO Scott Kirby wants to eliminate the need for flight attendants to apologize to customers, employee incidents continue to be reported—and not only involving passengers. There have also been reports of inappropriate actions toward their own co-workers and a pilot berating crew members over the intercom.
