Delta Air Lines Ups Rivalry With American And United With ‘First-Ever’ Premium Perk

To compete with United and American, Delta Air Lines introduces a premium perk “for the first time ever,” where travelers can earn limited-time welcome offers across the carrier’s credit card portfolio, perfect for customers on the lookout for premium benefits.

According to Delta’s news release, the premium credit card perk was never offered before, marking the first time the carrier has included two round-trip Comfort certificates as part of a welcome offer for the Reserve American Express Consumer Card.

Delta SkyMiles might be one of the airline loyalty programs that are quietly gutting their miles in 2026, and the carrier’s newest premium perk is designed to attract new cardholders. However, it is only for a limited time.

Starting August 27 to November 4, all eligible members of the new Delta SkyMiles American Express Card can enjoy the new limited-time welcome offers across the card portfolio, which includes a new “first-of-its-kind” welcome offer for the Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Consumer Card.

“New limited-time welcome offers make it a great time to apply for a Delta SkyMiles®American Express Card, building on 30 years of added value through new benefits, premium travel experiences, and exclusive Card Member access,” reads Delta’s statement in its news release.

According to Delta, this is the first time it is offering two Round-Trip Delta Comfort Flight Certificates and 50,000 Bonus Miles after customers make $10,000 in purchases on their new card within the first six months.

Delta also said that the flight certificates have no blackout dates and are valid for eligible round-trip travel on Delta-operated flights within the U.S. Lower 48, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A 21+ day advance purchase is required. Taxes and fees up to $80 per person apply. Terms and other restrictions apply.

The move comes as major U.S. airlines, such as United and American Airlines, continue to compete not only on fares and routes, but also on loyalty programs, premium cabins, and credit card benefits.

In addition to the new Reserve American Express Card, Delta offers other limited-time welcome offers that travelers can take advantage of.

For frequent travelers, these perks play a deciding role in determining which airline earns their business, and Delta’s latest offer gives its SkyMiles program another way to ramp up, particularly with the growing competition against the other major U.S. carriers, such as United’s MileagePlus and American Airlines’ AAdvantage.

These incidents, including Delta’s refusal to refund a downgraded couple and its doubled cancellations to over 19,000 compared with last year, stand in contrast to the carrier’s attempt to incentivize loyalty.

As Delta competes for high-value travelers against United and American, these loyalty perks could strengthen passenger commitment when paired with improved operational reliability and customer service, which can significantly influence the travel experience.

While Delta’s newest welcome offer could provide more immediate value to customers, the taxes and fees of up to $80, as well as the $10,000 spending requirement within six months, may put customers off, though frequent flyers with the carrier may not see this as a loophole.

In addition to the spending requirement, the Reserve Amex Card comes with a $650 annual fee, but it may be most attractive to frequent Delta fliers who can comfortably meet the spending threshold and make use of the card’s broader premium benefits.
