United Airlines flight 858 departed at 12:43 p.m. local time on June 24 from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), bound for San Francisco International Airport (SFO), according to flight data. Just after takeoff, a Chinese woman became unruly, prompting the flight to be diverted to Narita International Airport (NRT), according to passengers who shared videos of the incident online.

The Chinese woman, whom a passenger’s partner described as being middle-aged, got into a heated argument with a flight attendant. Another passenger provided a detailed account of what they witnessed. They said the woman became unruly right as the flight took off.

“She tossed all the documents in her seat pockets in the air, shouted cuss words periodically, and also periodically started hitting herself,” they wrote on Reddit.

The traveler went on to say that the passenger then began behaving “rudely” toward the flight attendants.

“She then started acting rudely towards the flight attendants as if trying to grab their attention. When the flight attendants come asking why, she says they ‘oppress me,’” the traveler wrote.

The passenger who shared the story told TheTravel that “she didn’t act hostile towards other passengers.”

Eventually, the crew captain came over to her and tapped on her shoulder several times, and that’s when “she elbowed back.” They started shouting at each other, and she replied, “No, you don’t talk to me like that.”

“The crew captain started scolding the old lady like a child, and soon after started yelling back and forth, saying, ‘No, you don’t talk to me like that,'” the passenger recounted.

When the woman was served food, she “threw all the trash on the floor, making a mess in her row,” the passenger said. She attempted to show fellow passengers a photo on her phone of “how she was being oppressed,” according to the traveler.

The passenger told TheTravel that they weren’t able to see what was on her phone, while others “shunned her and tried avoiding conflict.”

Flight attendants stopped approaching her, and eventually, passengers were notified that the flight was being diverted, the passenger wrote. The pilots are estimated to have had to dump up to $50,000 worth of fuel to divert the plane, since aircraft have a maximum landing weight.

TheTravel reached out to the airport’s local police station, which told TheTravel to contact the airline directly.

United Airlines said in a statement to TheTravel, “United flight 858 from Shanghai to San Francisco diverted to Narita International Airport to address a disruptive passenger. Law enforcement met the aircraft upon arrival and removed the passenger. Maintenance teams inspected the aircraft, and the flight has since departed for San Francisco.”

The flight landed at Narita International Airport nearly 4 hours after it had departed from Shanghai, according to flight data.

The passenger said the woman appeared confused when Japanese police came to remove her from the plane and said she “didn’t want to go as nobody had told her” prior. Videos showed her shouting in Mandarin, “What are you guys doing?

“It took roughly 10 minutes for a Chinese-speaking police officer to remove her from the plane “cooperatively,” according to the passenger.

The aircraft was at the airport for slightly over an hour, with some reports suggesting it was stuck due to a maintenance issue; however, the passenger told TheTravel they don’t believe this was the case.

“I don’t think there was any maintenance issue. They just had to do all the preflight maintenance check again,” they told TheTravel.

The flight eventually landed in San Francisco, about two hours after that route’s typical arrival time.

Reactions To The United Airlines Flight Incident

In addition to fuel costs, United Airlines may have incurred other expenses, including landing fees, passenger compensation, and crew duty time.

People on Reddit took to the comments to weigh in on the situation. Some pointed to Japan’s criminal justice system.

According to the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Japan, the country has over a 99% conviction rate after indictment. It also specified that the court could issue an initial 10-day detention, so the prosecutor can continue their investigation, and at the end of that period, the prosecutor can request another 10-day detention, which can be a total of 23 days.
