Not all passengers on board Amtrak are in for unnecessary noise. Many want a peaceful journey, where they can take a nap, unwind, or work without dealing with loud passengers. Amtrak’s Quiet Car has long been one of the railroad company’s most appealing services, but in recent years, the rules on board have not been followed.
However, recent passenger accounts on Reddit have renewed optimism among travelers after one rider recounted how a conductor repeatedly reminded passengers that unnecessary noise on board will not be tolerated. Many travelers were pleased, including one who admitted that he’s “a little closer to giving Amtrak another chance.”
Amtrak Passengers Laud Conductor For Strict Enforcement Of Quiet Car Rules
Many Amtrak passengers keep breaking the Quiet Car’s “unofficial rule,” such as bringing kids on board, who are unpredictably noisy (and it’s normal).
However, children are not yet prohibited from boarding the Quiet Car, and many passengers called for a controversial ban after France’s high-speed rail service, TGV inOui, barred young children from riding the Optimum Dedicated Space trains to “ensure maximum comfort.”
Although Amtrak has not banned little kids from riding the Quiet Car, passengers recently shared their experience on board when a conductor actively and strictly enforced the rules.
“Before leaving Moynihan this afternoon, an Amtrak attendant stood at the back of the quiet car and repeatedly announced that this is the quiet car, the one place people can sit in quiet and not hear your conversations. Reiterated no cell phone use, no talking, and that they WILL be enforcing it,” reads the passengers post on Reddit.
The passenger said that he hopes to continue seeing strict enforcement on all future trips, saying that the conductor told the guests on board to “move to one of the other train cars” if they can’t handle being quiet. He added that the conductor’s active enforcement of the rules also saved him from dealing with a woman behind him talking on the phone about someone’s dead dog.
In a separate Reddit thread, someone also shared a screenshot of a passenger’s post saying that “the conductor just made the best quiet car announcement” she has ever heard.
The post reads: “This is the Quiet Car. If you’re going to feel some kind of way when people shush you, then you should not sit in the Quiet Car.”
A Reddit user commented on the post and said that the conductors on the Quiet Car in DC “run a strict program.” However, other passengers said their experience on the Quiet Car was the opposite, as some conductors “don’t care” about the rules at all.
U.S. Travelers React To Amtrak Conductor’s Strict Enforcement Of Quiet Car Rules
The recent passenger experiences on Amtrak’s Quiet Car earned a positive response from travelers, but others recounted their bad experiences, too. One individual commented on the Reddit post and said that he will only continue booking with Amtrak if the company strictly enforces the Quiet Car rules.
Although there were passengers who shared their bad experiences, some conductors are serious about the rules. In a recent discussion on Reddit, another passenger shared that a conductor told a disruptive rider that he was writing him up after refusing to stop talking on the phone loudly.
The poster also asked if this little-known consequence of violating the Quiet Car rules was real, since it was the first time he had ever heard of it.
Amtrak’s rules have been controversial with other passengers, as the company still allows young kids to ride the Quiet Car, despite it being a library-like atmosphere.
Traveler Feedback On Quiet Car Enforcement
|
“Hearing about attendants clearly announcing and enforcing the rules brings me a little closer to giving Amtrak another chance.” |
|
“Thank the Lord! I’m only going to continue booking Amtrak if they enforce the quiet car rules. It’s too much money for the amount of noise and chaos on those trains.” |
|
“The Quiet Car is my refuge. I love when the conductors spell it out!” |
|
“Luckily, this has always been my experience!” |
|
“Yes! Yes! Yes! That should be the standard on every QC-related trip.” |
|
“I don’t believe this. I’ve never seen a conductor care about it at all.” |
|
“Thank you, Amtrak, for enforcing these rules. There are still a number of us who care about courtesy and decorum in public.” |
The public’s reactions to the conductors’ strict enforcement of the Quiet Car rules were positive, although many travelers experienced instances where some conductors didn’t.
Amtrak’s Quiet Car Rules And What These Mean To U.S. Travelers
The Quiet Car is meant to be a library environment, and Amtrak has explicitly stated on its website that guests on board should exercise a low-level voice so as not to disturb others.
“Guests are asked to limit conversation and speak in subdued tones. Phone calls are not allowed, and all portable electronic devices must be used with headphones (passengers using headphones must keep the volume low enough so that the audio cannot be heard by other passengers). Low overhead lighting creates a restful atmosphere for all passengers, but reading lights are available,” reads Amtrak’s reminder on Quiet Cars.
Not everyone in the Quiet Car is “quiet,” and passengers, especially traveling families with kids in tow, should understand that these rules are meant to protect other travelers from unnecessary noise, and they are here to stay.
In the 2024 Amtrak Ridership report, passengers revealed that they love the Quiet Car section of the Northeast Regional, as it offers refuge to travelers who want to enjoy peace without the distractions of screaming children, phone calls, loud conversations, and other electronic devices.
Amtrak also has several online reminders for passengers who want to ride the Quiet Car, including:
- Speaking quietly
- Making phone calls elsewhere on board the train, and
- Using headphones (kept to a minimum volume)
For U.S. travelers, strict enforcement is a customer service benefit, and not an inconvenience, making train rides more comfortable and peaceful. This also means that consistency can significantly shape the passenger experience.
